How Laura Clynch achieved her Level 8 Degree in Applied Social Care while working full-time
Our Educational Assistance Programme supported her career and academic ambitions
For many professionals in social care, balancing work and education can seem like an impossible challenge. However, Laura Clynch’s experience proves that with the right support, it’s not only achievable but also incredibly rewarding.
Thanks to Odyssey Social Care’s Educational Assistance Programme, Laura was able to complete her Level 8 Degree in Applied Social Care while continuing to work full-time.
New perspective on work
Laura has been working in the social care sector for four years, and her dedication to the field only grew stronger as she pursued her degree. The opportunity to study Applied Social Care gave her a new perspective on her work, allowing her to link academic theory with her daily practice.
“The course has given me a much greater awareness of the work I do every day. There were things I knew instinctively, but now I have the knowledge and vocabulary to fully understand and apply them,” she shared.
Engaging and relevant modules
One of the aspects Laura found most beneficial was the relevance of the course modules to her role. She highlighted several subjects that stood out:
- Contemporary Issues in Social Care: Covering topics such as grief and identity, this module provided a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those in care.
- Psychology: With a strong emphasis on trauma, this module was particularly impactful, helping Laura better support the young people in her care.
- Leadership: The timing of this module was perfect, as Laura had just stepped into an acting deputy manager role. Learning about different leadership styles helped her navigate this new responsibility with confidence.
- Ethics: This module provided clarity on the moral and ethical considerations essential in social care, ensuring best practices in decision-making.
- Dissertation: Laura’s research focused on vicarious trauma, a crucial topic for those working in emotionally demanding environments.

Flexibility of online learning
One of the key benefits of the Educational Assistance Programme grant was that it enabled Laura to study while continuing to work. The online nature of the programme, with classes held in the evenings, made it manageable alongside her shifts.
“Even if I was working, I could log in from the office and attend my classes. It was incredibly convenient,” she explained.
Laura also emphasised how the structure of Odyssey Social Care’s shifts — particularly the 224-hour model — made it feasible to juggle work and study.
“Some people might be hesitant about studying while working full-time, but in this job, it’s absolutely possible.”
Looking to a bright future
Now that Laura has completed her degree, she is considering furthering her education in the future. While she hasn’t yet decided on a specific master’s program, she is grateful to have the foundation to take that step whenever she’s ready.
“Having the Level 8 Degree gives me options. I know that if I want to pursue a master’s in the future, I can,” Laura says.
Encouraging others to take leap
Laura hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others in social care to take advantage of the Educational Assistance Programme.
“If you’re thinking about furthering your education, don’t let the fear of balancing work and study hold you back. It’s completely doable, and Odyssey Social Care makes it possible.”
Her journey is a testament to how employer support and personal determination can come together to create incredible opportunities for growth. Congratulations to Laura on her achievement, and best of luck in all that’s ahead!
